The Scars of Bullying Don’t Have to Define You.

This may be hard to read, but the main cause of low self-confidence and low self-esteem is bullying. “More than 1 in 3 people are bullied in their lifetime, with 1 in 6 experiencing chronic bullying.”* Bullies come in a lot of guises. They can be classmates, siblings, teachers—or, sadly, our parents. A lot of bullying happens in childhood (I’d rather be friends with a cobra than a middle-schooler). But bullying doesn’t always end in childhood. As adults, we might meet a bully in the workforce. We might date a bully. We might even marry one.

The scars left by bullying run deep. Even if the bullying ended years ago, you still feel the powerlessness and fear. The sadness and pain. You still hear the hurtful messages that play in your head like a broken record: I’m not good enough. I’m lazy… stupid… fat… ugly… worthless… a loser. No one would like me if they really knew me. I’ll never fit in. I’m not good enough.

You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck.

I’m here to tell you that you absolutely are good enough. You have the power to fight back and stop living in fear of judgment, failure, and criticism. You can step out of self-doubt and step strongly into a life of confidence and self-assurance. You can stop hiding who you really are. Because there are no mistakes in creation. You are amazing. Even if you don’t see it yet, I do. I see a survivor who can break free from the prison of shame and self-doubt to live a genuine, joyful, and authentic life.

I wouldn’t stand up for myself when people treated me badly, because I feared they’d get angry or stop liking me. Along my path, I completed my PhD (something I never thought I’d be able to do) and found my true life partner.
